What Google Can't Search For

No, it's not happiness. I actually think Google can locate that for you.

It's, and pay attention, simply this "$|".

Yep, that's a dollar sign followed by a pipe symbol. Go ahead, try and google for that. Unless they fix it after I've posted this on January 12, 2007 @ 1:50 PM MT it will produce absolutely no results.

Now, I know, normally that's no so stupendous and hardly blog worthy. There are plenty of search terms you can think of that will produce no results. However, searching for "$|" doesn't even return the normal page that says something like:

Your search - "google better not find this exact phrase anywhere on the web, argh" - did not match any documents.

Suggestions:
  • Make sure all words are spelled correctly.
  • Try different keywords.
  • Try more general keywords.

It simply returns nothing, no error, no explanation. It's weird. And, blogworthy.

Actually just a search for | will yield the same result, same with } and a few others.

Put in just about any symbols and get the same result. Doesn't have to be $|

Actually the dollar sign does not have to be next to any other sign, just by itself, and it's not the only symbol that this happens with.

You get the same thing with ! or @ or # or % or ^ or ( or )

No pipe required. I didn't go through the rest of the characters, because I'm not that bored.
